Michigan City Housing Authority delays officer elections until next meeting

Vice Chair Reyna presided over the Michigan City Housing Authority Board meeting on Feb. 19 and the board voted to postpone its annual officer elections until the next scheduled meeting.
The delay followed discussion after Chairman Vinson vacated his chair for the election process and nominations were opened. Commissioners nominated themselves and nominated Commissioner Fly, who was not present and reportedly hospitalized. Staff advised that the authority’s bylaws permit self-nomination and that Robert’s Rules allow nominations without seconds, but also cautioned that allowing a remote vote would require prior notice and a livestream under the Open Door Law.
Given that the board had not provided prior notice that remote participation would be allowed and that setting up livestreaming midmeeting would be problematic, a commissioner moved to continue the current officers through the meeting and table the election until the next meeting so the election appears on that agenda and proper arrangements can be made. The motion to table was accepted.
The board’s action means the authority will present the officer-election item on the next agenda; staff said tabling the item will allow time to ensure any remote participation is noticed and technically supported so all nominees can participate consistent with state open-meeting rules.
