Board hears teaching-and-learning update showing gains and new reading tools

At the Feb. 12 board meeting Trustee Perino summarized recent work by the teaching and learning committee, reporting measurable improvements and several pilot initiatives.
Perino said data show the share of students above identified achievement thresholds increased in many subjects at the high school. He noted specific subject trends and stressed the district’s use of data-driven interventions and remedial units where students have not mastered prerequisite standards.
Perino highlighted several classroom innovations and programs: adoption of whiteboard tables to encourage collaborative learning, pilot assessments to choose reading materials, and the use of Beanstack, a digital reading-tracking platform intended to promote daily reading habits and provide insight into scholars’ reading behaviors in middle schools.
Perino credited teachers and administrators for the progress and said the committee will continue to monitor academic achievement across grades. Trustees on the committee who contributed reports include Robin Poole and Barbara Recchio, according to Perino’s summary.
Board members thanked Perino for the update and indicated continued emphasis on sustaining academic gains.
