During public comment at the Jan. 8 board meeting, Ralinda Nalinda spoke on behalf of Linda Galindo about bullying incidents involving Galindo's son, Jonathan Ramirez Galindo, at Oak Avenue and about the family's difficulty obtaining interpreter services at the school front office.
Nalinda said the child returned home with sore feet after other students took his shoes and tossed them, and that when the family raised the issue at the front office they were told to make an appointment and that the district would call back once an interpreter was booked; Nalinda said Galindo did not receive the promised callbacks and encountered the same barrier when seeking follow-up on her child's progress.
After the comment, President Jaime asked the superintendent to ensure district staff follow up with the family at the school site.
What this means: The comment raises language-access and student-safety concerns the board asked staff to investigate; the district has a duty to respond to public commenters and to ensure parents can access interpretation when requesting student support.
