Youth Council condemns killings of Renee Goode and Alex Preddy, urges transparent investigations and supports youth protests

The Milwaukee Youth Council voted to condemn the killings of Renee Goode and Alex Preddy and urged full, transparent investigations while commending youth activism.

Clerk introduced File 2602, saying the resolution "condemns the killing of Renee Goode and Alex Preddy," calls for a thorough investigation into the circumstances leading to their deaths and "urges the Milwaukee common council to support the calls for full and transparent investigations." The analysis also commends the youth of Milwaukee for their commitment to justice and urges continued actions such as school walkouts.

Members voiced support and a range of concerns. Member Hilliard said he believes the actions of "certain federal agencies currently is stealing members of of families, killing people illegally and against the law," calling those acts unlawful and unconstitutional and urging action. Mateo De La Cruz said the city should make Border Patrol and ICE activities in Milwaukee as transparent as possible to reduce disinformation and confusion. Member Osmond, who said her family is Somali, described fear in her community: "People in my family, they don't want to wear the hijabs outside," and expressed support for peaceful youth protests. Serena Thao and other members expressed support for youth activism; Adeline Chavez urged Milwaukee Public Schools to avoid condemning student voices and to provide support for student-organized actions. Kalise Williams urged educating people affected by ICE about their rights so they can respond if stopped.

Following discussion, a member moved for adoption; the clerk called the roll and the motion carried with 10 ayes and 1 excused. The resolution was adopted.
