Council approves Sergeant Park memorial request from bereaved mothers group, city to manage fundraising

The Hibbing City Council on Jan. 8 voted to allow a bereaved mothers group and Light After Loss Minnesota to fundraise and develop a memorial in Sergeant Park.
City staff described the proposed project as centered on an Angel of Hope statue with a memorial wall, future walking paths and benches. Staff said the project would be 100% fundraised by the group and that the city would serve as project manager and "gatekeeper" for design and construction.
"This would be a 100% fundraised by the by the group," city staff said during the presentation. Staff also said they had discussed location options and would work with the group and an architect to complete concept plans.
Mayor Hajduk said he would be willing to provide an initial contribution from his contingency fund and asked the group to submit a formal request to staff; the mayor offered $500 toward the start of the project. One councilor (Maria) announced an abstention from the vote; the motion otherwise passed.
City staff and the council said they will work with the group on design and fundraising timelines and return to council with updates as the project advances.
