Hibbing City Council voted April 16 to vacate a plotted portion of 32nd Street West from 7th Avenue West to 8th Avenue West, approving a resolution after a public hearing and reserving a utility easement so city utilities remain accessible.
Resident Michael Tyson, who identified his address as 3206 7th Avenue, told the council he and Sam Adams seek the vacation because they “do not want to see a finished street at this location” and that vacating the street would let them better maintain properties on the west side of the corridor. City staff advised the council that utilities run through the alley and recommended the council reserve an easement for those utilities if it approved the vacation.
City staff said the ordinance requires a unanimous council vote to vacate a street. The council approved the resolution (referenced in the meeting as resolution 25004 17) on a motion by Mr. Merrill with support from Councillor Swiberger; the motion carried on a voice vote.
The vacation will transfer the street to adjacent private ownership while preserving a public easement to allow continued city access to utilities. The transcript records no additional contingencies; the council’s action was a formal approval of the vacation request at this meeting.
