Local veterans group asks Portage County to become a Purple Heart County; organizers offer to present in May

Community members asked the Portage County Board of Commissioners on Feb. 13 to adopt a resolution designating the county a Purple Heart County.
Linda Dillon, who identified herself and described her son Ben's Purple Heart awarded posthumously, said she has worked with the National Purple Heart Association and that its national chair, Jerry Farris, would travel to present a sample resolution, bring Purple Heart recipients to speak and provide a color guard and signage. The signage would include county-limit markers noting the Purple Heart designation; organizers said they could also coordinate with Hometown Heroes to broaden the event.
Steven (representing Homefront Heroes of Portage County) said the group formed last August and would help organize and "do the groundwork" for the designation. Commissioners thanked the presenters and discussed scheduling a presentation; the presenters said May (early May, not Memorial Day) was a likely timeframe for Mr. Farris' availability and that they would coordinate a date with county staff so the event could be televised and streamed.
Next steps: organizers will provide details and a proposed resolution; Mr. Farris would appear with a color guard and Purple Heart recipients if the board approves a designation.
