Hibbing council approves fire truck equipment, library purchases and excavator replacement

He also requested purchase of a Chrysteel Stahley utility body for $26,009.33, funded with one-time legislative dollars, which the council approved. Chief Janko said the chassis is expected in mid-January and installation of the body and pump should be complete well before the next fire season.
Library director presented two items: acceptance of four donated paintings valued at $2,000 (Resolution 24-12-02) and approval to accept a $3,000 grant from the Benjamin P. Owens Family Foundation for the 2024 Yuletide Festival (Resolution 24-12-03). The council approved both; the grant vote recorded three abstentions in the meeting transcript. The library also received authorization to purchase a Cover-1 book-binding repair machine for $1,290 and to contract grant-writing services (Miriam Carroll) for $3,250 to support a $500,000 MDE multipurpose community facilities grant application.
Fleet manager recommended downsizing to a Komatsu excavator to meet DOT transport-weight requirements and to better match operators' needs. The council approved the $232,000 purchase from Road Machinery with funding from the waste collection/sewer fund. Fleet manager reported a trade value of about $85,000 and an expected sale price in the $100,000 range for the outgoing machine and estimated lead times of 2'to'3 months.
Councilors moved and approved each item by voice vote during the meeting. The meeting record shows motions and supports for the purchases and the library resolutions; staff was directed to proceed with procurement and scheduling.
What comes next: staff will finalize purchase orders, schedule chassis/body installation for the brush truck, and proceed with the grant application work and equipment disposal plans.
