Huntsville ISD board approves 2026–27 traditional instructional calendar

HUNTSVILLE, Texas — The Huntsville Independent School District Board of Trustees voted to approve a traditional instructional calendar for the 2026–27 school year after presentations from district staff and discussion about community priorities.
The calendar, presented by Mr. Forney, preserves what district leaders called community "nonnegotiables" — including Labor Day, Thanksgiving and a two-week winter break — and adds three professional learning days compared with the current year to support implementation of the recently adopted Bluebonnet curriculum. Forney noted the calendar complies with state requirements of 187 staff workdays and 75,600 student instructional minutes, and includes additional built-in days for inclement weather.
Dr. Shepherd emphasized community preference for a traditional calendar during the discussion: "our community prefers a traditional work calendar," he said, noting the trade-offs of moving to a nontraditional schedule. After brief discussion, Mister Hendricks moved to approve the calendar; a second was given. President Ken Holland called for the vote and the chair announced the motion passed.
At the start of the action items the board had also approved the consent agenda by motion and voice/hand vote. The board announced a special called meeting for March 17 at 6 p.m. and noted the regular March meeting will be moved to March 24 because of a local parade.
