Wilsonville arts commission highlights HEARTS sculptures, $25,000 community grants and library mural

The Arts, Culture and Heritage Commission reported awards of a $25,000 community events grant to five nonprofits, installation and auction of HEARTS public art sculptures (bidding closes March 6) and approval of a children's library mural funded by the Library Foundation.
Erica Valentine, Wilsonville's arts and culture program coordinator, told the City Council on Feb. 19 that the Arts, Culture and Heritage Commission (ACHC) awarded the community cultural events and programs grant (a $25,000 annual allotment) to nonprofit recipients including Charbonneau Arts Association, Wilsonville Rotary Foundation and Wilsonville Stage. Valentine said eligibility for that grant requires nonprofit status and that awarded funds support arts, culture and heritage events.
Valentine also reported that the HEARTS public-art project (10 fiberglass sculptures funded by the Metro Community Enhancement Grant Program) has been installed and that an online auction is open with bidding through March 6; "Any funds that are generated from any of the sales will go to fund future public art projects," Valentine said. The ACHC updated the Heritage Tree nomination process and approved a new heritage-tree designation for a Leland Cypress at the Wilsonville Road and Boones Ferry intersection. The ACHC also approved a children's mural for the Wilsonville Public Library (artist Julia Hunkler), funded entirely by the Library Foundation.
Councilors praised the commission for outreach and programming and asked staff to continue public engagement. The council approved the related consent-item resolutions on the evening's consent agenda.
