Board hears facilities progress and professional development plans ahead of school year

District facilities and instruction support staff updated the board on projects completed over the summer and professional development planned before the new school year.
Mr. Decker reported facilities improvements across elementary and secondary sites: a two‑way mirror observation window at Highland Park for reading‑recovery observation, completed tennis courts at Sheridan High School, concrete grinding for damaged sidewalks, movable lab tables installed in the agricultural classroom, gym floor refinishing and new ADA‑compliant bleachers, and playground surfacing completed and opening soon. He said crews and contractors finished work ahead of the start of school and that some punch‑list items remain.
Principal Swan described how the two‑way mirror observation room supports reading recovery and professional development: "Some kids know that they're being observed, sometimes they don't, but it provides professional development opportunities so we can watch in action," she said.
Miss Gariffa summarized professional development offerings: responsive literacy, early intervention training, discovery training for social‑emotional skill instruction, ALICE and CPI safety/crisis prevention training, PLC refreshers, and an ‘‘Living, Working and Learning with AI’’ session for all staff on Aug. 21. She said foundational PD is funded by the district (general fund and applicable grants such as Title I/II) while staff‑requested graduate coursework is typically staff‑funded.
Trustees thanked staff for summer project work and asked follow‑up questions about classroom use and funding. Administration said PD and many facility projects were funded through a mix of district general fund and grant sources and that library and PD implementation items will be monitored and reported back to the board.
Next steps: Facilities to finalize punch‑list items; library and PD teams to implement access restrictions and PD schedules before students return.
