Riverwoods police reported that officers tracked and arrested two suspects connected to a Jan. 23 catalytic‑converter theft and later recovered more than 130 catalytic converters from a Chicago storage facility.
The police chief told the board investigators identified a vehicle from the Jan. 23 theft at Ray's Auto Service, entered the license plate into the department's camera alert system and were notified when the plate was seen again. "So on Tuesday, February 10 at 11:59AM, it did hit on the camera at Milwaukee and Deerfield Road coming eastbound," the chief said, and officers stopped the vehicle before it reached I‑94 and took both occupants into custody.
Police executed a search warrant on Feb. 14 at a Chicago storage facility with assistance from a Lyons detective, the chief said. "We recovered over 130 catalytic converters, precious metals, and other car parts that were recovered," the chief said, adding the investigation is ongoing and officers are working to identify individual items.
The chief described using a custom entry in the camera system so officers would be alerted when the vehicle was seen again. Lyons authorities have since charged the same two suspects in a related case, the chief said.
The investigation remains active; the police chief said the recovered property is being cataloged and identified for possible linkage to additional thefts.
