School board advances revised library materials and discrimination complaint policies to public review

Policy staff detailed a consolidation of multiple library and media policies into a single IJL policy covering material selection, reconsideration timelines and a procedural request form. Staff explained timeline changes from 'school days' to 'calendar days' and the inclusion of an American Library Association Bill of Rights attachment to the policy packet. The recommended deletions (JBA, IJL‑E1, IJL‑E2, IJL‑P) were presented as part of that consolidation.
Trustee Tomlinson raised a privacy-related concern, saying, "I just had a concern on IJL, page 10, section 7... I just wanna make sure that we are not restricting parents' knowledge as to what kids are getting in the library by having this statement within our policy." Policy staff and trustees responded that the process includes levels of reconsideration, superintendent review or committee review, and that community roundtables were scheduled for Oct. 8 to collect feedback.
The board voted to approve the listed policies on first reading by voice vote. Trustees later approved related nondiscrimination and other policies on second reading. Staff emphasized that the policy process includes multiple review points (PAC, board policy committee, district distribution) and invited stakeholders to participate in upcoming forums.
