East Aurora board showcases EA PAWS comfort-dog program districtwide

Aurora East USD 131 officials used part of the Feb. 17 board meeting to highlight EA PAWS, the district’s comfort-dog initiative that pairs certified dogs and handlers with schools to support students’ emotional well-being.
Britney Walker said EA PAWS launched in 2023 with partner Healing Hearts and has grown to include teams in every East Aurora school "as of January 2026." "EA PAWS is more than a program. It's a reflection of our commitment to creating schools where every student... feels safe, supported, connected, and cared for," she said. Walker introduced multiple handlers and dogs by school, and the board paused for a group photo and brief interactions.
Robin Dixon, assistant director of student services, thanked building administrators and staff for supporting the teams and described the multi-year effort to train handlers and integrate the program into school climates.
The presentation included remarks from several staff and board members who described positive reactions from students and teachers; district leaders said they will continue to monitor and support the program’s implementation and safety protocols.
