Council honors local hero, artist and postal workers

The Santa Ana City Council opened its Jan. 20 meeting with a series of ceremonial recognitions.
Councilmember Becerra presented a recognition to Otoniel Gómez for his actions during a Dec. 6, 2025 house fire in which he helped rescue five people. Council members and fire staff described the rescue and urged residents to test smoke detectors. “Él nos recuerda que de las personas maravillosas que tenemos aquí en Santa Ana,” Becerra said when presenting the award, and Otoniel Gómez accepted the recognition, thanking the council and the fire department.
Councilmember López recognized local musician and artist Francisco (also identified as Francisco Isaís) for his artistic work documenting neighborhoods and supporting immigrant residents. Francisco thanked the council, called the recognition an honor and urged continued community support for local artists.
Councilmember Peñaloza read a proclamation honoring the anniversary of the U.S. Postal Service and recognized postal worker Priscila Denisse (accepted on her behalf by Jennifer Borja). The proclamation noted the postal service’s role assisting seniors and limited-English residents and praised workers who continue service despite staffing challenges.
These ceremonial items were presented early in the meeting and the council paused business to offer appreciation for community service and local civic engagement.
