Marseilles wins $1.5 million federal grant for Sycamore Street bridge; council approves engineering contracts

"I was contacted, and advised that the city has received $1,500,000 grant from Senator Tammy Duckworth's congressional discretionary spending," Mayor Hollenbeck said, noting the project was included in the THUD portion of the Consolidated Appropriations Act. He said the grant will help make the project shovel-ready.
Council members discussed design details including acquiring three lots on Yonge Street east of Sycamore Street to allow the new bridge and a straighter roadway alignment. The council heard that the proposed bridge will be designed to HS-20 (state-legal) load limits so it can safely carry fire engines and school buses.
City engineer Mike Eschied and staff were credited with preparing the application, and Mayor Hollenbeck thanked local businesses, residents, state and federal legislators, city staff and the North Central Illinois Council of Governments (NCICG) for letters of support.
The council approved the motions for phase 1 and phase 2 engineering services by recorded roll call votes; both measures passed unanimously.
Next steps described at the meeting include finalizing design contracts, coordinating required state specifications and moving toward construction once required approvals and matching funds are confirmed.
