Council moves to repeal zoning protest provision to comply with state law

The Saint Francis Common Council approved a planning commission recommendation on Feb. 17 to repeal and recreate section 4-55–59 of the city code to remove a protest provision tied to zoning amendments.
A planning commission representative explained that a protest provision previously allowed neighboring residents to register protests to zoning amendments but that a 2018 statutory change and a June 2023 change (Wisconsin 2023 Act 16) created a sunset for such municipal protest provisions that expired on Jan. 1, 2025. The representative said the code change is intended to bring the city's zoning procedures into compliance with Chapter 66 of state law.
The council seconded the recommendation, discussed briefly and approved the motion by voice vote. No amendments were recorded at the meeting; the council set the public hearing process as part of the ordinance revision.
