Orange High students honored for state athletics and National Merit distinctions
Summary
Board recognized state qualifiers and winners in golf, cross country and tennis, including a school record in girls cross country and the district's first girls singles tennis state champion; four National Merit commended scholars and four semifinalists were also announced.
The Nov. 10 board meeting included a lengthy student recognition segment highlighting fall athletics and academic honors.
Athletic Director Tim Porter recognized golf qualifiers Jordan Klotman and Anuja Patel. Marina Campbell was acknowledged for finishing 30th at the state cross-country meet and setting a new school record with a time of 19 minutes, 10.5 seconds; the boys cross-country team qualified for state as a team for the first time in the records presented.
Coach Bull and others celebrated an historic run for Orange tennis: team and individual qualifiers, two doubles teams and Genevieve Hayden winning the individual state singles title. Hayden was not present at the meeting because she was traveling home from the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
School leadership also announced four National Merit Commended Scholars (including Mark Buckley, Adler Sheffetz and Ben Levy) and four semifinalists (Sean Bhatt, Matthew Camilla, Caroline Yang and Anna Ponca Carmen), noting those students scored in the top percentiles on the PSAT.
Board members and attendees gave the students and coaches extended thanks and applause; the athletic achievements and academic recognitions were presented as highlights of the district year.
