Resident group asks Orange City SD to recognize Lunar New Year, 'Wale' and Eid on district calendar

A resident advocate told the Orange City School District Board on Nov. 10 that families representing hundreds of students want formal recognition of the Lunar New Year, Wale (as stated in the petition) and Eid on the district calendar.
"We are advocates for the inclusion of multiple holidays and representing hundreds of families and students in the Orange School District who celebrate the Lunar New Year, the Wale and Eid," Meher Khan said, presenting a petition the speaker said carried more than 350 signatures and noting the petition had been emailed to the superintendent.
Khan said that districts nearby, including Solon, Beachwood and Twinsburg, have taken similar steps and argued that formal recognition would "validate the identities and contributions of our students," reduce bullying and increase engagement and attendance. Khan offered to collaborate with the district to implement calendar changes.
Board members confirmed receipt of the emailed petition and said they would review the document. The superintendent accepted that a copy had been sent and indicated it would be considered with board materials and follow-up after the meeting.
The public comment segment closed without immediate action by the board; the speaker asked only that the board consider the petition and thanked members for their time.
