Brunswick Board spotlights students, coaches and staff at Nov. 19 meeting

The Brunswick Board of Education used the opening portion of its Nov. 19 meeting to recognize students and staff for volunteerism, service and athletic and academic accomplishments.
Megan Thompson, sixth-grade assistant principal, highlighted 32 high school students who served as Camp Newhawk counselors; selection was competitive (32 counselor slots from 168 applications), and counselors earn a volunteer seal and cord for commencement after 50+ volunteer hours.
The board also recognized middle- and high-school staff with the district’s "B for Excellence" awards based on nominations from parents, students and colleagues. Examples cited included paraprofessional and bus driver Mike Blum and Officer John Watoone for their daily support of students, and teachers at the elementary and high school levels nominated for empathy and classroom support.
Seven students were named to the Ohio Attorney General Teen Ambassador Board; the board noted the selective nature of that program and its statewide civic-learning opportunities. Fall athletic teams were also honored: boys and girls soccer earned the United Soccer Coaches High School Academic Award (team GPAs of 3.46 and 3.72) and girls golf won the first conference championship in school history.
Board members and presenters thanked coaches, parents and staff and took photographs for certificates. The recognition segment concluded before the district’s safety presentation and the meeting’s regular business.
