Public Safety Committee approves appointments, a one-year violence intervention grant and routine contracts

At its Feb. 18 meeting, the Public Safety Committee approved a set of routine appointments, a temporary grant acceptance and several intergovernmental and equipment agreements.
Appointments: The committee confirmed yearly appointments and reappointments to the Chautauqua County Emergency Medical Services Council; Noel Gutman noted appointees volunteered for the positions and committee members asked that future appointment lists include appointees' municipality of residence. The committee also confirmed appointments to the Chautauqua County Fire Advisory Board and introduced Nicholas Niles as the board's incoming chairman.
Grants: Madeline Cantapullia of the district attorney's office briefed the committee on a one-year Violence Intervention Program grant awarded by the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) to cover year-one funding that had been lost from an Office of Victim Services award. Cantapullia said the one-year grant covers the period 09/01/2025–09/30/2026 and the requested budget amendment shifts $104,458 from federal aid to state aid in the 2026 budget to reflect the grant. She said the office currently has two staff working on the program and hopes to add a third because of caseload.
Contracts and equipment: The committee authorized standardizing technical rescue equipment on Paratech for the county technical rescue team and renewed intergovernmental agreements: vehicle fueling with the Town of Hanover (continuation of a long-standing arrangement), court security services with the Town of Sheridan (not to exceed $1,500), and enhanced police protection services with Chautauqua Lake Central School (to allow staffing for special events and occasional full-time coverage). Sponsors noted staffing shortages among part-time deputies and adjusted contractual language to reflect full-time deputy costs where applicable.
