The Clifton Heights police department is preliminarily expected to receive accreditation from the Pennsylvania chiefs’ accreditation board at the next state commission meeting in April, the police chief told council on Feb. 10.
The chief said the accreditation follows a year-long review with assistance from a consulting firm and the Pennsylvania Chiefs organization; the department’s materials in council packets describe the process and the benefits accreditation brings to policing standards and borough liability.
"After our review, yesterday and today, by the PHDs and their accreditation board, that we are preliminarily, going to receive accreditation in the next commission meeting in April," the chief said. He added that accreditation is voluntary now but expected to become mandatory for all police departments in the near term and noted that only about 200 departments statewide have achieved it so far.
Council members and the manager praised the chief and officers for the effort. The manager said the evaluators expressed admiration for the department’s professionalism, equipment and standards during the two-day review.
Why it matters: Accreditation is used by police agencies to document compliance with professional standards; if made mandatory by state policy, accredited departments may be better positioned to meet future regulatory requirements. Council asked no additional votes on the accreditation itself; the update was provided as part of the chief’s monthly report.
Next steps: The chief will transmit final accreditation confirmation to council after the commission meeting in April and will continue to share documentation and committee reports as required.
