Hazardous Materials Commission sets Sept. 11 forum, adds e-bike battery safety resources and explores translation options

Commission staff and an ad hoc planning group told the Hazardous Materials Commission they had finalized logistics for a public forum scheduled for Sept. 11, with doors opening at 3:30 p.m. and the program running roughly 4–6 p.m. The meeting will be held at the Contra Costa County Administration Building and will include information tables and panel presentations.
The ad hoc committee said it would add National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) resources on lithium-ion battery safety — a short NFPA video and resource pages — to the commission’s resources tab on the hazardous materials commission website so forum attendees and members of the public can access plain-language guidance about safe charging, UL compliance and storage risk mitigation.
Volunteers and commissioners assigned roles for the forum, including greeters, index-card collectors for audience questions, timekeepers and Q&A readers. Staff confirmed 100 color flyers with QR codes linking to the commission web page and agreed to circulate Spanish-language PDF versions alongside the English materials. Staff also described framed stand-up information sheets for the info tables showing collection-bin locations and other resources.
Commissioners and staff discussed accessibility for Spanish and other language speakers. They explored the county’s Zoom/Wordly translation account and Zoom’s translated-closed-caption feature. Staff cautioned some features may be account-specific and agreed to test language and captioning functionality during a technical dry run of the Zoom/webinar settings and microphones ahead of the event.
A staff-led technical dry run and AV check were scheduled before the forum to confirm camera, Zoom layout and captioning; staff said recordings and materials would be available after the event.
