Gila County OKs $40,000 Safe Routes grants for three school districts

Supervisors approved memoranda of understanding to provide $40,000 each to Miami Unified, Pine Strawberry (Pine Elementary) and Hayden Winkelman school districts for pedestrian and bicycle safety projects through 9/30/2026; staff said schools were chosen using Safe Streets data and one district was selected per supervisor area.
The board approved memoranda of understanding that will send $40,000 apiece from Gila County Public Health and Community Services to Miami Unified School District, Pine Strawberry (Pine Elementary) and Hayden Winkelman Unified School District to support pedestrian and bicycle safety programs and safer travel to and from school.
Community Services staff said the awards are part of the county’s Safe Routes and Safe Streets initiatives, that the districts were selected using data showing walking and crossing risks, and that the funds can buy signs, cones, bike flags and support small events and consultant work to organize volunteers. Pine Strawberry Superintendent Kitty Austin and Miami Superintendent Richard Ramos thanked the board and said the grants will help address rural-area safety challenges.
Supervisor Humphrey moved to approve the MOUs and Supervisor Klein seconded. The board approved the agreements and participants gathered for a photo after the vote.
