The board approved Amendment No. 1 to professional services contract #061225 to raise the not-to-exceed compensation for the contracted defense counsel who handles felony criminal, juvenile delinquency and mental-health cases for indigent clients. County staff said the attorney has incurred significant trial and appeal expenses and the amendment will allow continued representation without interruption.
Mr. Husk (presenter) explained the county moved indigent defense management out of Superior Court into a separate indigent services division to avoid a conflict of interest; that department manages these contracts now. Supervisors asked procedural questions about staffing and administration; the chair said personnel and staffing structure are not on the current agenda and can be discussed in a future work session.
Supervisor Humphrey moved to approve the amendment, Supervisor Klein seconded, and the board approved the increase by voice vote.
Staff will proceed with contract modification paperwork so the contracted counsel may continue representing indigent defendants while covering higher projected costs for trials and appeals.
