Gila County approves small economic development agreements for veterans groups, search and rescue, youth education and schools

The Gila County Board of Supervisors approved a series of economic development agreements funded from supervisors' constituent accounts to support local organizations and schools.
Chuck Mernick, commander of American Legion Post 147, requested $2,500 to help replace and maintain three flag displays in town; he said the post spent about $4,800 last year on flag work and requests county assistance for replacement costs. The board approved economic development agreement number 20260181 for that purpose.
The board also approved a $2,500 agreement for Tonto Rim Search & Rescue (2026-0189) to purchase equipment and tables to support operations. Presenters for Brownsville Western Heritage asked for $20,000 (agreement 20260192) to support Ag Days and other educational programming that organizers said served about 300 students and represented roughly 1,200 student-hours of instruction; they said Ag Days cost approximately $10,000 over a two-day period. Supervisors approved the Brownsville request.
Supervisors approved smaller awards to Hayden Winkelman Unified School District (20260199, $1,500) to support scholarship programs for graduating seniors and to Young Public School (20260202, $1,000) to support installation of a patriotic display on school grounds. Each agreement was described by board members as serving the public benefit and was approved by motion and voice vote.
The board took photos and thanked presenters after the approvals.
