The Buckfield Select Board on Feb. 3 handled several formal actions in a meeting that followed a public hearing on the town’s updated general assistance ordinance.
Dissolution of cemetery ad hoc committee: The board accepted the cemetery ad hoc committee’s recommendation to dissolve after the committee completed its assigned work. Staff described improvements to cemetery records and processes, including updated online burial records, a cleaned-up checklist and GPS mapping of plots. The motion to dissolve was made, seconded and carried.
Consent agenda and finance note: The board moved to accept the consent agenda; department highlights were provided in the packet. The total reported on the consent agenda was $330,415.39. A motion to postpone approval of the Jan. 20, 2026 minutes to the next meeting (to allow members to review hard copies for grammar and punctuation) was made and approved.
Town meeting schedule: The board adopted the proposed town meeting schedule. Key dates set were: nomination papers available March 1, filing deadline April 10, absentee ballots available by May 10 and town meeting on June 9. Board members discussed statutory timing (40-day/45-day windows) and the clerk’s recommendation to finalize the warrant to meet those requirements.
BHS Withdrawal Committee legal counsel: The Select Board accepted the BHS Withdrawal Committee’s selection of Freddie Flaherty’s proposal to serve as legal counsel. A committee member noted the law firm’s experience representing Dixfield during its pullout and familiarity with RSU 10; the committee planned an in-person meeting with the attorney in Buckfield on Feb. 12.
Committee appointment: The board appointed Abby Jones to the budget committee for a two-year term and noted two remaining open seats on the committee. Meetings will be livestreamed and recorded when the presenter is present.
Adjournment: The board adjourned at about 6:44 p.m.
