Truckee residents urge county to slow review of proposed Klondike Flat sawmill, call for EIR

Several Truckee‑area residents told the Board of Supervisors they oppose a proposed sawmill and glulam factory planned for Klondike Flat Road, urging the county to require a fuller environmental review.
Mike Geary, representing Friends of Prosser Truckee, told the board the project will dramatically increase logging and truck traffic — “logging truck, double trailer logging truck, and lumber truck passing by our little residential… every 7 minutes and 22 seconds,” — and warned of safety hazards at the Highway 89/Alder Creek Road intersection. Geary asked the board to use its authority to step up the project’s CEQA review from a mitigated negative declaration to a full environmental impact report so the community can assess air quality, noise, traffic and other impacts.
Other Klondike Flat residents echoed those concerns at the meeting and asked supervisors to convene a public listening session; the board said staff has scheduled a community listening session on June 20 and encouraged continued engagement.
What residents want: opponents requested a denial or delay of the proposed project, stronger traffic and air‑quality mitigation, and clearer community outreach and environmental review before any approval. The board did not act on the project at the meeting and directed staff to continue outreach and briefing work.
