Nevada County staff and community partners promoted a Ready, Set, Go emergency-preparedness campaign focused on wildfire readiness and emphasized steps residents should take to prepare, shelter and evacuate.
Presenters outlined the three-tier Ready, Set, Go approach: Ready (prepare and harden homes before incidents), Set (move to pre-evacuation posture when threat is near) and Go (evacuate on order). Staff recommended defensible space practices and home-hardening measures such as screening vents and using noncombustible deck materials to reduce ember entry. "That's gonna be putting the fine grain mesh around the vents of your home so that embers won't get into under your house or into the eaves of your house," a presenter said.
The county introduced ZoneHaven as a supplemental mapping tool that helps residents identify an evacuation zone for their address. Staff instructed residents to visit community.zonehaven.com, enter an address and record the assigned zone so they can interpret CodeRED or Nixle advisories more effectively. "ZoneHaven and knowing your zone does not replace Nixle and or Code Red. It actually supplements them," a staff member said.
During public comment, residents described personal evacuation experiences and emphasized neighborhood networks. One survivor credited a neighbor and a pre-arranged call tree with saving lives during a rapid evacuation, urging others to "Find your 5" trusted contacts. Ulysses Palencia from the 2-1-1 call center noted 2-1-1's role in relaying county information and resource-center directions: "In Nevada County, 211 is available 247. So we provide for the community is information."
The campaign pairs digital alerts (CodeRED, Nixle) with mapping (ZoneHaven) and community outreach, and staff encouraged residents — especially those with medical dependencies — to plan for power needs during PSPS and outages.
The presentation was informational; no binding action was taken.
