Board members heard a detailed update from the Food Bank of Nevada County about rising demand, distribution methods and plans for closer county coordination.
Dean Barta (board vice president), Julie Thornberry (executive director) and Doug Fleming (board president) told the Board the organization has been in the county for nearly 40 years and operates direct distributions, home delivery, a school snack program and partner-agency distributions. Thornberry said a survey of more than 500 clients found over 50% of recipients were age 65 or older, 38% were single parents, and more than 80% were employed or living on fixed incomes.
The Food Bank reported distributing more than 2,000,000 pounds of food last year and estimated that food deliveries create about $6 million in local economic impact because households reallocate their food budgets. Staff described operational constraints: reliance on donated food, storage and transport limits, and the weekly need to secure supplies for planned distributions.
Presenters asked for continued county collaboration to reduce congestion at large distribution sites and to expand access through partner agencies and the Route Center. The Food Bank provided contact information and urged residents who need food to call 211 or visit foodbankofnc.org for a calendar of distribution sites.
Supervisors commended the Food Bank's volunteer network and operational scale and discussed possibilities for long-term partnership, grant coordination and emergency-response alignment.
