Board honors three long-serving county leaders: Mike Dent, Steve Monahan and Ed Schofield

The Nevada County Board of Supervisors set aside substantial time at its Dec. 10 meeting to recognize long-serving county employees and officials.
Mike Dent was honored for 30 years of service, including six years as director of housing and child support services; speakers credited him with advancing affordable‑housing projects (Brunswick Commons, Lone Oak Apartments and others), expanding winter shelters and converting motels into permanent housing. Jeff Thorsby and County leadership praised Dent’s cross‑departmental work and legacy in homelessness response.
Steve Monahan, director of Information and General Services (IGS), received a 25‑year recognition for work on energy conservation, broadband expansion, IT modernization, and county facilities. Speakers noted statewide awards (including California Public CIO of the Year) and Monahan highlighted the county staff team.
Supervisor Ed Schofield (Scofield), recognized for more than 36 years in public service (including four terms as District 2 supervisor), received tributes from colleagues, past supervisors and community members who cited leadership on fairground management, transportation projects, municipal advisory councils, wildfire insurance outreach and long-term stewardship of county institutions.
All three honorees received certificates and public applause; members of the board and community described each honoree’s impact on county services and infrastructure.
