County expands spay-and-neuter program and integrates it into animal shelter operations

Lori (animal services) said more than 534 applications have been received and about 175 procedures completed across six clinics; mobile partners (SNP) and local low-cost clinics (Bridal Save and others) helped expand access.
Staff described clinics held in North San Juan (86 spays/neuters over two days) and other locations, and they said the program has reduced the burden of unwanted puppies and kittens entering the shelter. Supervisors praised partnerships with local nonprofits (Sammy's Friends, Wayward Journey) and volunteer efforts and suggested budget subcommittee review of longer-term funding options.
Staff recommended the program cease being labeled a short-term "pilot" and instead be integrated into the animal shelter operating budget so it can be sustained; supervisors asked staff to consider budget options during the subcommittee process.
Next steps: staff will propose how to incorporate ongoing spay/neuter services into the shelter budget and will continue working with community partners to expand clinic capacity and volunteer support.
