Council reshuffles Meet Minneapolis executive seat after dispute over downtown representation

Minneapolis — The City Council amended its list of outside‑board appointments Feb. 19 after an extended discussion centering on representation on the Meet Minneapolis Executive Committee.

Council Member Schaeffer moved an amendment to replace Council Member Wansley on the Meet Minneapolis Executive Committee, saying Ward 7 — which includes the convention center and many downtown assets — had traditionally held the executive seat and that her constituents rely on that representation. "For me to not be on this committee really diminishes my ability to represent my constituents," Schaeffer said.

Council Member Wansley opposed the amendment, arguing that downtown already has heavy representation and that other wards deserve seats, especially as the city shapes recovery and cultural‑corridor investments. Several members called for compromise or to take the matter offline; Vice President Osmond suggested circling back at the end of the agenda. Council Member Palmisano criticized the process and said leaders should have engaged colleagues proactively before finalizing appointments.

The amendment to add Schaeffer to the Meet Minneapolis Executive Committee carried by a narrow margin, and the full appointments package was later approved by the council (final roll 13 ayes). Several council members said they expect continued engagement on representation and that clerks will add any missing co‑authors at the committee level where appropriate.

Vote: Amendment to replace the Executive Committee seat passed (7 ayes, 6 nays); final appointments approved by roll call (13 ayes).
