Board approves boundary adjustment; student-privacy and law-enforcement access policies set for further edits

During its Feb. 17 meeting, the Elko County School District Board of Trustees approved a boundary-line adjustment worked out with the city of Elko to align district descriptions with city mapping near Elko High School (the parking lot area adjacent to the football field and fairgrounds).

The board also heard first readings of two policy updates. Policy JJA (education records privacy) was presented with edits proposed by district leadership and legal to conform to changes from Assembly Bill 6 concerning what qualifies as directory information and protections for student privacy. No final action was taken on the policy; the item was presented for a future vote after legal review.

Policy JCBC (rights and responsibilities; investigations, searches and law enforcement access to students) was likewise presented for a first read with proposed changes prompted by Assembly Bill 4. Board members offered suggestions and at least one member of the public commented on considerations for the policy; the board did not adopt final language at the meeting and directed additional revisions.

Finally, staff presented proposed revisions to Policy GGDB02 (substitute teacher compensation) as a first read, noting proposed reductions to regular and long-term substitute pay rates as part of broader budget recommendations. Feedback was recorded; no vote occurred on that policy at the meeting.
