Irondale adopts ordinance strengthening enforcement on junk, refuse and debris

Councilman Sims presented Ordinance 2026-O9 to amend Chapter 9 (nuisances) of the municipal code governing junk, refuse and debris. The ordinance is intended to give the city additional tools to require cleanup, levy fines and seek restitution where property owners persistently leave prohibited debris or improperly staged items on their property.
Sims said the change allows the city to not only remove unpermitted debris but also pursue the responsible property owner in court to recoup the city’s costs. "This allows the city to actually not just eventually come pick it up, and we're stuck with prepaid for all that. Now we can actually take them that ticket to court...and they could get fined and we can recoup the funds that we spent," Sims said.
Later in the meeting councilors moved to consider the ordinance immediately, suspend the rules preventing same-day adoption and then adopted Ordinance 2026-O9 by roll-call vote; each council member present recorded a "yes" vote during the roll call.
The ordinance will apply as written in the municipal code amendment; staff and the city attorney were asked to confirm enforcement procedures and court referral steps as the city implements the change.
