Parks committee recommends city council approve Centennial Park rededication plaque

A parks advisory committee recommended that city council approve a commemorative plaque and modest site improvements at Centennial Park to mark the city’s centennial and the park’s rededication on April 15.

A Centennial Committee representative told the board the park — commonly thought to be named for the city centennial — was originally named in 1988 for the post office’s centennial and the new plaque will explicitly recognize the city’s centennial. “So for your consideration today…and with any questions you may have, is a plaque in Centennial Park,” the presenter said, identifying the preferred site just east of the kiosk and near the veterans memorial. The plan includes adding pavers and a couple of benches and coordinating minor planting around the plaque.

Board members asked whether the proposal had received any negative feedback; the presenter said she had received only positive responses from community members. She also noted council previously approved renaming the gazebo the Robert and Sue Vetter Gazebo and that the gazebo plaque will be unveiled once produced.

A motion to recommend city council approval was made, seconded and approved by roll call. The clerk called the roll and recorded affirmative votes for the named members present; the chair announced the motion passed. The recommendation now moves to city council for final approval and scheduling of a formal dedication on April 15.
