Speaker 8 said a lacrosse parent reported difficulty assembling players after the district moved lacrosse to spring and added competing girls' sports such as flag football, softball, tennis and track. "So whereas they did not excuse me...they moved lacrosse to the spring and that's a girls sport and they've added flag football," Speaker 8 said, noting multiple spring sports can conflict for athletes.
Board members and administrators discussed options including co-op teams, allowing a homeschooled student to play at the nearest school when the zone school does not offer the sport, or handling exceptions on a case-by-case basis. Administration asked Tim James to consult the athletics authority referenced in the discussion and return policy options.
Speaker 23 said the policy would be brought back to the March policy meeting with recommended language and options. The board did not change the policy that night; next steps include administration's outreach to the athletics authority and drafting flexible policy language for the March meeting.
