Hamilton County board moves diversity policy 5.1042 to first reading after debate

At a meeting of the Hamilton County School Board, members voted to amend the agenda and move policy 5.1042 to a first reading, setting up further discussion about whether to rescind or rewrite the district's diversity language.

The motion to place 5.1042 on the first-read list was made during the agenda approval and adopted by roll call. Legal counsel and administration told the board that the state rule that previously required such a policy had been repealed. "The policy's being rescinded, but if the board approves this proposal, the policy's rescinded," Speaker 22 said, adding that rescission would not limit the superintendent's authority to pursue qualified educators from any background.

Not all board members agreed rescission would be appropriate. Speaker 9 criticized the idea on grounds of ongoing bias, saying, "If people would do the right thing, it wouldn't be a need for a policy such as this," and urging the board to consider real hiring disparities in practice.

Board members pressed for clarity on whether the proposal removes the word "diversity," replaces the policy, or merely edits language. Several directors asked that the full redline and related options be discussed at a policy meeting scheduled for March 5, and that community members have an opportunity to review proposed revisions before a final vote.

The board did not take final action on the substance of policy 5.1042; the item will return for a policy discussion on March 5 where the redlined draft and legal context will be considered.
