Commissioners OK local match for countywide fire prevention grant

Montgomery County commissioners approved a resolution on Feb. 19 to provide a required local match that enables the Montgomery County Fire Chiefs Association to use a FEMA Fire Prevention & Safety grant.
Brian McCowen, speaking for the fire chiefs association, told commissioners FEMA awarded $587,809.52 to support smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, bed-shaker units, a countywide mapping program to distribute detectors to high-need areas, training for fire and EMS personnel, and certification training for juvenile fire-setting intervention specialists. The required nonfederal match is $29,390.48; the resolution authorizes the county to provide that amount so the project total ($617,200) can move forward.
Commissioners described the award as a high federal-to-local funding ratio (roughly 95% federal to 5% local) and voted unanimously to approve the match.
County staff said the program will prioritize communities with the greatest need and include outreach and training components for emergency-service partners across the county.
