Montgomery County approves $500,000 Safe Streets planning grant for county roads

Montgomery County commissioners approved a planning grant agreement on Feb. 19 to create a countywide safety action plan for 75 miles of county roads.
Matthew Popak, who presented the item, said the grant is part of the US Department of Transportation’s Safe Streets for All program enacted under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and will provide $400,000 in federal planning funds. "The main point and outcome of the planning grants is to come up with comprehensive safety action grants," Popak said. The county will match the award with $100,000 from remaining ARPA funds, creating a $500,000 budget to develop the plan and position the county for future implementation grants.
County staff said the plan will cover varied road types across Montgomery County, from denser segments such as Easton Road in Abington to rural pikes and park roads. Commissioners authorized staff to sign the grant agreement, move forward with a request for proposals for engineering services, and return required documents to federal oversight authorities. The motion to approve the resolution passed unanimously.
The county said the planning effort is intended to identify safety projects that could reduce serious injuries and deaths on the county's roadways and to make the jurisdiction competitive for later federal implementation funds. Commissioners said the effort supports ongoing local projects in Abington, including stormwater and pedestrian improvements.
