The team said construction documents are underway and proposals for contractors are planned to be solicited in May; board questions focused on adaptability of existing structural walls and whether spaces allow future expansion.
Staff also summarized two districtwide energy and HVAC projects. A "Cool Chillers" project approved in September 2024 carried a listed budget of $3,900,000 and involved replacing chiller units at multiple campuses. A Lone Star HVAC/lighting project approved in January 2025 carried a listed budget of $4,300,000; presenters said LED lighting is complete districtwide except at the high school and that chiller installations were in final stages with punch-list work remaining.
During a separate agenda item, trustees considered the method of project delivery for Red Barn renovations. Staff explained the difference between a design-build model and competitive sealed proposals (design-bid-build) and recommended the competitive sealed proposals route to secure best value and broader bidding. Staff estimated the competitive process would add about two months to the timeline versus design-build (roughly 20 months total) but could save district funds. Trustees voiced concern about sequencing projects and ensuring classroom capacity and student facilities are prioritized; one trustee said projects that expand classroom space should come first. The board approved using competitive sealed proposals for the Red Barn renovations; the motion carried with a recorded majority (5-1) in favor.
No new budget appropriations were enacted during the update; contractors and next steps were described as contingent on returned proposals and board approvals.
