Student board member recaps Lockport Twp HSD 205 meeting; students honored and scholarships announced

Avery Bridal, the student board member for Lockport Township High School District 205, delivered a brief recap of the Dec. 16 board meeting, highlighting student recognitions, conference takeaways and upcoming student opportunities.

Bridal said the board recognized three students who reached Eagle Scout rank — Owen Cazero, Caleb Lenz and Dennis Lee — noting Eagle Scout is the highest rank awarded by the Boy Scouts of America and a significant honor. She also announced that Haley Johnson earned all‑state honors at the 2024 IHSA state competition and was named girls swim and dive athlete of the year.

The girls volleyball team was recognized for placing third at the IHSA state finals, the program’s best finish since 1996. Bridal thanked families and staff for attending the meeting to support the students.

Bridal reported that board members attended a November conference and summarized those takeaways during the IASB Governing Board Report. She said the conference gave her ideas for amplifying student voices during board meetings: "I also got the opportunity to attend the conference and learned so much about how I can help amplify student voices during the board meetings."

Looking ahead, Bridal announced school events and opportunities: The Nutcracker performance is scheduled for Dec. 19–20, and the LDHS Foundation has opened scholarship applications for graduating seniors with a deadline of April 4, 2025. "I highly encourage you to fill out some," she said, noting the foundation offers 35 scholarships plus additional awards from community organizations.

Bridal closed the brief by thanking listeners and inviting the community to tune in to the January board meeting.
