Lockport Twp HSD 205 reviews Press 117 policy updates and Title IX regulatory alignment in first reading

At its Feb. 20 meeting, the Lockport Township High School District 205 board took a first reading of a package of policy updates under Press 117.

Key items reviewed included an updated ethics policy that clarifies political activity and prohibited gifts for board members; a strengthened set of duties for board officers aligning the president’s role with state school code; an increase in the bidding threshold for facility alterations to $35,000; and updates to personal technology and social media language to incorporate modern platforms (X, Threads, Discord) and smartwatches.

The policy package also included legal references and changes tied to Title IX regulatory shifts: staff noted that some December Title IX rules were ruled unconstitutional, and the district will operate under the 2020 Title IX regulations while related policy language is reviewed. Other changes clarified suspension reporting thresholds (collection of interventions for suspensions of four or more days) and removed duplicate written reporting requirements for suspected abuse after an oral report to DCFS.

Administration described the presentation as a first reading; the board will be asked to act on the policies at the next regular meeting. Staff encouraged board members to signal any concerns now so the formal vote next month reflects needed adjustments.

The district noted that most of the legal references and supplementary footnotes do not require board approval but that the substantive policy changes presented will return for board action.
