Board creates Newtown precinct, selects Emmanuel Methodist Church as polling site

The Amherst County Board of Supervisors voted to establish a Newtown precinct that will use existing town borders to separate town voters from the courthouse precinct.
Elections staff explained that dividing the precinct removes the need for two ballot styles at the courthouse precinct and that Emmanuel Methodist Church agreed to serve as the polling location. Staff and a board member inspected the church to confirm compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act and other polling-location requirements.
There was no public opposition during the hearing, and the board adopted the ordinance by voice vote.
Board and staff members noted the registrar’s office will need to plan for staffing and materials for the new precinct; a member of the public later urged the board to ensure the registrar has resources to staff polling places and recruit poll workers for the additional site.
