Casa Grande approves $1.4 million contract for 12 additional pickleball courts at Dave White Park

Casa Grande — The City Council voted unanimously to award a contract for construction of 12 additional pickleball courts at Dave White Regional Park, authorizing up to $1,400,000 in city funds, including a $60,882.07 contingency.

Aaron, a city staff presenter, recommended the council authorize the city manager to award a contract with General Acrylics Incorporated “not to exceed $1,339,117.93,” and explained the proposal uses pricing established through the Mohave Cooperative Services contract (25-LGAI3-0203). The resolution recorded on the dais was numbered 5886.

The project will add 12 courts immediately west of the existing pickleball courts, bringing the park’s inventory to 24 courts. Staff said the work will begin about 14 days after the notice to proceed — likely in early March — and that construction is expected to take approximately 185 days. The project scope includes demolition of existing racquetball courts and two sand volleyball courts; sand volleyball courts will be relocated to the south end of the park.

Support from the public accompanied the staff presentation. Resident Kurt Bauer told the council, “I am here today to express my unwavering support for the proposed extension of the pickleball courts at Dave White Park,” saying the sport’s local demand and tournament potential justify the investment.

The resolution motion was made by a council member and seconded; a roll-call vote recorded affirmative votes from Council member Grama, Council member Dugan, Council member Edwards, Council member Hedelson, Council member Herman, Mayor Pro Tem Dillon and Mayor Fitzgibbons, and the motion carried.

City staff said the project used an established cooperative purchasing contract and that funding is available through the city's approved capital improvement plan. Staff also noted not all public design requests could be accommodated within the current budget and that future improvements may be pursued in later capital projects.

The council’s action authorizes staff to execute the contract and transfer budget authority so construction can proceed. The awarded contract and project information are to be administered through the city’s Community Services department; staff will manage construction and subsequent amenity improvements.

Next steps: staff will finalize the notice to proceed, execute the contract with General Acrylics Incorporated and begin construction on the Dave White Regional Park expansion.
