Charlotte County commissioners unanimously adopted a hospital assessment resolution Tuesday that county staff said is required for local hospitals to participate in a state-federal matching program to cover uncompensated care.
AdventHealth Port Charlotte President and CEO Adam Johnson and HCA Florida Faucet Hospital CEO Michael Ehritt addressed the commission in support of the resolution. County staff explained that the assessment is computed as 0.25% of gross inpatient revenue and 0.94% of gross outpatient revenue for each assessed hospital property; assessed dollars are pooled, sent to the federal government for matching, and returned via the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration in larger amounts to support uncompensated care.
The board opened the public hearing, heard supportive public comments from residents and hospital representatives, then moved and approved the resolution. Commissioners described the assessment as a tool that allows local hospitals to access additional federal funds by contributing a small share of revenue locally.
What's next: Staff will implement the assessment following required administrative steps and continue to coordinate with hospitals and the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration on the program timeline.
