Commissioners approve Englewood boardwalk design selection, direct staff to explore limited site options

The Charlotte County Board authorized staff to negotiate with the top-ranked firm on design services for replacement and repair of the Inglewood/Englewood Beach boardwalks and associated dune walkovers, approved as items F9 a and b.
Tommy Scott, community services director, told commissioners the RFP scope covers design, permitting and the option to incorporate hazard-mitigation measures tied to potential FEMA funding. Commissioners discussed whether to insist on a like-for-like rebuild or to use the opportunity to evaluate resilient materials, reduce overall boardwalk length and examine nearby land for additional parking. Staff said the RFP and the negotiated contract can include limited additional options but that a full park master plan would require a separate procurement and timeline.
Commissioner Doherty moved to approve F9 a and b and to direct administration to negotiate with the top-ranked firm to clarify options; the motion passed unanimously. Staff said the negotiated contract will come back to the board for final signature and that they will also return with appraisals and comps for a nearby parcel the board asked staff to evaluate for potential parking expansion.
What's next: Negotiations will clarify whether limited site or materials options can be incorporated within the existing RFP boundaries; if the board wants a larger master-planning effort, staff said that would require rebidding and additional time.
