The board recognized multiple students as scholarship semifinalists and celebrated Lillian Hartsell as an NCAT Beginning Teacher of the Year finalist; LCPS staff will present two programs at the NCATLL conference.
The Lenoir County Board of Education opened its Jan. 5 meeting with several recognitions. Superintendent Williams and staff announced multiple students who have been named semifinalists for statewide scholarships, including Cody Baggett and others, and recognized teachers involved in student successes.
Representatives from the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching (NCAT) presented a certificate to Lillian Hartsell (transcript spellings vary), a seventh-grade social studies teacher at E.B. Frick Middle School, who was named one of 27 finalists for the NCAT Beginning Teacher of the Year award. NCAT said finalists will attend a week of leadership professional development and that the winner will be announced at an event in Winston-Salem on March 12.
District presenters also previewed two sessions selected for the North Carolina Association for Teaching, Learning, and Leading conference: "Workforce Ignite — building tomorrow's workforce," which highlights a pre-apprenticeship guaranteeing jobs for successful completers and district-run internships, and "Accelerating student learning with high-dosage tutoring," which emphasizes interventionists and retired-teacher support to accelerate student learning.
The board applauded the honorees; no formal votes were required.
