Council honors libraries, students and local teams during Feb. 20 meeting

Speakers highlighted the Central Library’s time-capsule finds, announced yearlong centennial programming and pointed residents to lapl.org/Central101 for events. The council honored the Friends of the Woodland Hills Library on their 50th anniversary; Lena Dunn, the group's president, accepted an apron and thanked volunteers for sustaining branch programs and quarterly book sales. Former Councilmember Dennis Zine was noted as a member of the Friends’ executive committee.
Councilmember Monica Rodriguez introduced the San Fernando High School Tigers — the 2025 CIF City football champions — with remarks from Principal Mejia praising the school's legacy and inviting council members to visit the campus. The chamber applauded the marching band, cheer teams and coaches.
Members also announced community festivals (Chinatown Golden Dragon Parade and El Pueblo’s Black History Month celebration), senior‑service and wildfire‑resiliency events, and programming tied to Black History Month, including the 'Black Women Lead' exhibition in the Bridge Gallery.
These recognitions were delivered as part of the meeting’s presentations before public comment and business items.
