The DeSoto County School District paused its meeting for School Board Appreciation Week, honoring Marsha Foster as the district's first School Counselor of the Year and recognizing students and seniors from multiple schools with brief performances and photo opportunities.
Tawana Williams, the district's director of mental health services, presented the DeSoto County School Counselor of the Year award and highlighted the district's counseling staff.
"We have 83 amazing school counselors in our district," Williams said as she introduced Marsha Foster of Pleasant Hill Elementary School, whom she congratulated as the inaugural DeSoto County School Counselor of the Year. Williams said Foster has "served as school counselor for 22 years and given 18 of those years to us," and noted local, state and national recognition.
Earlier in the meeting a student choir from Sarasota Elementary School, brought by Miss Duke and led in part by choir director Kayla Dearborn, performed brief appreciation remarks and took photos with board members. Jacob Stricker, principal of Olive Branch High School, and other principals recognized graduating seniors and invited groups forward for team photos.
The recognitions interrupted the business agenda for a short period to allow photo opportunities and presentations. After the awards and student recognitions, the board returned to its regular agenda business.
